Residence - Marina District, Mandeville, LA

Another challenging project in the Marina District in Mandeville.  Located on the East side of town along Bayou Castine, the Marina District offers many opportunities on unconventional sites.  This particular site was considered "unbuildable" due to the canopy of numerous live oak trees and wetlands consuming much of the site.  The solution involved a minimally invasive foundation of timber pilings with no concrete and no impervious paving at the ground level.  The canopy and structure of the live oaks were analyzed and a strategy was developed to place the foundation and structure in the only available area and cantilever the structure outwards at the main level to expand the available footprint.  The result is a home that lives within the trees, almost able to reach out and touch extremely old live oaks from its porch while protecting their future.
